Subject matter

There are three parts to this story. The I. The You. And the Us. One would not exist without the other. Through a three-part micro-film series, we attempt to display the multiplicity of Black identity through intimate self-reflection, candid dialogue, and community engagement.

Identity is something that is a fluid, subjective concept that constantly gets objectified externally. Thus, we decided to capture identity from multiple subject points. This not only provides a three-dimensional perspective of the identity of blackness, but pushes the work into a higher analysis of self and what makes it so.

Timelessly, blackness has been positioned in juxtaposition to righteousness. Blackness was utilized to create differences. However, within the identity, there are variations in culture, experiences, and values. Without blackness being the point of contrast, there is a challenge to binary conceptualizations.

With three to four minutes, at its core, each video invites viewers into an evolving, multi-voiced conversation on what it means to be Black, both individually and collectively. It is an attempt to capture the interiority often missing from mainstream portrayals of Black life, offering instead a textured cinematic collage of vulnerability, connection, and complexity.

The Real black identity

The definition of Black self-esteem presents a multifaceted inquiry: is it molded predominantly by socialization, racial categorization, or ethnic ties? Does it depend on melanin concentration or cultural upbringing? Where do the realms of blackness and self-esteem intersect, and where do lived experiences diverge from racial constructs? Moreover, can the concept of self-esteem be tangibly understood through shared experiences? Black self-esteem, as we define it, emerges as the self-assigned value to one's own personhood, shaped by race, significantly influencing individuals' perceptions of self-worth and competence.

Throughout history, the notion of self-esteem has been intricately intertwined with the Black identity, offering profound insights into the Black American experience. Despite enduring spiritual assaults, systemic oppression, and manipulative narratives, Black self-esteem has not only withstood the test of time but also experienced a resurgence amidst contemporary challenges.

Rooted in African heritage, the Black identity intertwines with the threads of all histories, yielding fruits of profound creativity, resilience, and the pursuit of collective liberation.
